Rory David Hoy is a PhD candidate in Digital Media and graduate researcher in the DisPerSion Lab at York University, Toronto, Canada.
His work is aimed at the crossroads between virtual acoustics, agent simulation, telematic music, and human/machine collaboration. His projects place performers and audience members alongside computational agents inspired by natural processes, such as the movement and growth of slime mold. These works investigate the perceptual outcomes of musical performance with artificial life systems.
Rory has had the opportunity to present projects internationally, with conference publications reporting on extensions to performance practices including non-human participants (CMMR 19/21/23), and methodologies for networked musical performance (Audio Mostly 21).
His musical performance practice considers timbral movement through noise, spatial audio, and low frequency rhythmic content through a processed bass guitar setup. This pratice is honed through various musical projects, and as an active member of the Doug Van Nort Electro-Acoustic Orchestra.
Rory holds both an MA and BA Hons in Digital Media from York University.
